Forbes AI 50 2026: Two Giants Raised $242.6B, More Than Half the Total

The Forbes AI 50 list is out. I glanced at the funding data and almost thought I miscounted the decimal places.

OpenAI plus Anthropic—these two companies alone raised a combined $242.6 billion. Note that’s in US dollars, not RMB. Converting to RMB… actually, don’t bother converting. The number is so large it barely feels real.

What’s even more absurd is that these two companies account for more than half of the total funding among this year’s AI 50 listed companies. What does that mean? The remaining 48 companies combined raised less than these two.

There are 20 new companies on the list, showing that AI entrepreneurship remains hot. But honestly, after seeing this data, I have mixed feelings.

On one hand, the massive capital influx shows the industry is indeed in an explosive growth phase with real substance. On the other hand, this ‘bipolar’ landscape is concerning—small money simply can’t compete anymore.

Think about it: $242.6 billion is larger than the GDP of many countries. With that much money to train models, buy GPUs, and poach talent… how can smaller companies compete?

I was chatting with a friend recently who is doing AI application-layer entrepreneurship. He said what scares him most now isn’t technical challenges, but when a giant suddenly announces ‘we’re going to build this feature too.’ Something you’ve spent six months building, they can copy in a month—and they have stronger foundation models to back it up.

But from another perspective, this might just be the inevitable pattern of technological revolutions. The PC era had Microsoft and Intel. The mobile internet era had Apple and Google. The AI era has OpenAI and Anthropic… history always rhymes.

For ordinary developers, rather than worrying about ‘not being able to compete with giants,’ it’s better to think about how to find your niche in vertical domains. After all, not every problem requires GPT-6 to solve.

Do you think this funding scale represents a bubble or real gold? Feel free to discuss in the comments.
